Our district’s mission is to provide students a comprehensive education so they can reach their full academic, physical and social/emotional potential.
How do we accomplish this goal?
The short answer is that we provide all students with individualized instruction based on their unique strengths and needs. Through our assessment program and observations by teachers, we determine gaps in student understanding and adjust instruction accordingly. Our teachers regularly meet in their grade-level teams to design lessons and plan instructional strategies based on an analysis of student assessment data.
Guided by the principles of differentiated classroom instruction, we have a full range of student support programs for all types of learners. For example, Culver School has an enrichment program coordinator to “stretch” students who would benefit from additional challenges. Our model Response to Intervention (RtI) system includes a number of research-based programs specially designed to close academic gaps and provide social/emotional support when needed.
We also believe strongly in a whole-child approach that develops students’ problem-solving abilities, resilience and leadership skills. We work hard to develop a positive learning environment by setting clear expectations, teaching behavior skills and engaging students in a variety of service learning.
Niles School District 71 offers students a wide range of opportunities in fine arts and athletics. All students have instruction in art every year. We have outstanding band, orchestra and choral music programs. Students can develop their fitness, teamwork and motor skills while playing volleyball, soccer, basketball and cross-country sports.
Of course, all of this would mean little without great teachers. All of our teachers take tremendous pride in developing the full talents of each child. They work hard at developing their skill sets, including numerous professional development activities outside of school every year.
We are a Community of Excellence!
