Early Childhood Program Expands
The Niles School District 71 Board approved a resolution to add an additional early childhood class for the 2016-17 school year.
“There is a large waiting list for our preschool program,” said Board President Matt Holbrook. “The additional half-day program will allow more parents to enroll their children in our exceptional program.”
Research shows that much of what you need to succeed in school is established before kindergarten. During this early stage children develop cognitive skills, the foundation for reading, math, science and academics. Preschool children also acquire social-emotional abilities, gross-motor skills, and executive functioning, which includes everything from impulse control to problem solving.
“The first four years are a crucial time in childhood development,” said Superintendent John Kosirog. “Expanding our early childhood program will enable more children to enter our full-day kindergarten program with the skills they need to be independently successful.”
The expansion of the preschool program will have a positive financial benefit to the district as well. The additional early childhood classroom will allow Culver to support additional at-risk students in on-site programs. As a result, District 71 will save on expensive transportation and out-of-district tuition costs.
