The magic of Cinderella graced the new Culver stage, in a heartwarming and vibrant production, under the direction of Mr. Burkhart and Ms. Lurie. These two worked tirelessly, using true teamwork to create an excellent production. Mr. Johnson and Mr. Wimbush, from our maintenance team, helped create a stunning set and helped backstage during the performance. We are so thankful for our staff collaboration, making this performance one for the books! From the shimmering gowns to the hilarious stepsisters, this rendition of the classic fairy tale swept the audience members, proving that happily ever after can indeed be found right here in our school community.
The lighting and costume design deserve special mention, with Cinderella's iconic transformation scene eliciting gasps of delight from the audience, thanks to a clever combination of sparkling fabric and theatrical flair. The show was also equipped with a giant pumpkin that transformed into a lit twinkling, working carriage!
The story truly came to life with the glimmering set pieces lovingly painted by the Culver Stage Crew and constructed by our devoted maintenance team. The crew maneuvered their creations behind the scenes taking us from the town square to the palace ballroom. They deftly changed the scenery as the curtain closed on the step family home to reveal the palace garden as the drama unfolded. After the performance, audience members posed with the characters in front of the scenery for priceless photo ops.
But the true heart of this year’s musical lies in its first-rate cast, a testament to the wealth of artistic talent within Culver. Emma shines as Cinderella, portraying her inherent kindness and resilience with a captivating grace. Her vocal performance is a highlight, her clear soprano soaring through beloved tunes like "In My Own Little Corner" and "When You’re Driving Through The Moonlight.” Opposite her, Olivier embodies the charming and earnest Prince Christopher.
The comedic brilliance of the production comes courtesy of Olive as the hilariously haughty Joy and Sydney as the equally ridiculous Portia. Their exaggerated mannerisms, outlandish costumes, and perfectly timed squabbles had the audience roaring with laughter. Of particular humor was the shopping scene, where the stepmother, played by Aleah, and her daughters order Cinderella around in her own home, driving the rift between them further.
Hope delivers a warm and wise Fairy Godmother, her appearance always signaling a delightful turn of events. Her rendition of “Impossible" was filled with promise and a touch of playful magic. Even the smaller roles, from our loyal Herald played by Hung to the charming ensemble singers and dancers, contributed to the overall enchantment of the performance.
The energy in the theater was infectious, a nod to the shared joy of live performance. The audience was thrilled! "It's wonderful to see such an excellent production on the new Culver stage,” Commented one attendee. Students’ eyes were wide as they enjoyed a daytime production. Many came back for more during our evening show.
Come next year, we encourage all 5th-8th grade students to audition for the spring musical or work backstage. We all left the performance with a smile on our faces and a renewed belief in the possibility of a little bit of magic in our everyday lives.
