The Niles Police and Fire Departments are conducting emergency-response training at Culver School on weekends throughout February. The training will help prepare Niles first responders for emergency situations, including armed intruders, for all facilities in the village.
District 71 officials say the district will receive an added benefit as well. “By hosting these training exercises, we’re ensuring that our first responders have firsthand knowledge of our building, which can make a crucial difference in an emergency situation,” said Culver Principal Erica Smolinski. “Providing a well-prepared and secure environment for our students and staff is a key priority for us.”
Niles School District 71 Board President Matt Holbrook highlighted the collaboration between the school and local emergency services. “We are incredibly grateful for the dedication of the Niles Police and Fire Departments,” he said. “Their commitment to continuous training and preparation helps create a safer environment for our school community.”
During the training sessions, emergency personnel will practice response protocols, assess building access points, and conduct scenario-based drills. While emergency vehicles may be present at the school, the public should be aware that there will be no actual emergency taking place.
Superintendent John Kosirog noted, “Strong partnerships between schools and emergency responders are essential in today’s world. This training not only improves response times but also strengthens our proactive approach to emergency readiness.”
This initiative reflects the ongoing commitment of emergency responders to preparation and readiness. Niles School District 71 remains committed to fostering a safe and secure learning environment for all students and staff.
